Developed by programmers at George Mason University, Omeka was designed to be user-friendly, both during installation and setup and during daily usage. To install Omeka, use these simple steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"level1\">\n<div class=\"li\">To get started you&#8217;ll need to login to your control panel (<a class=\"urlextern\" title=\"https:\/\/plymouthcreate.net\/dashboard\" href=\"https:\/\/plymouthcreate.net\/dashboard\" rel=\"nofollow\">https:\/\/plymouthcreate.net\/dashboard<\/a>) using your Plymouth username\u00a0and password.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/plymouthcreate.net\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/sign-in.001.jpeg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-271\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-271\" src=\"http:\/\/plymouthcreate.net\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/sign-in.001-1024x576.jpeg\" alt=\"sign in.001\" width=\"648\" height=\"365\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"level0\">\n<div class=\"li\">Once logged in you&#8217;ll be at the homepage of your control panel. Navigate to the\u00a0<strong>Web Applications<\/strong>\u00a0section of the cPanel and\u00a0find\u00a0<strong>Featured Applications<\/strong>. To begin the install click\u00a0<strong>install this application<\/strong>\u00a0in the upper-righthand corner.\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mediacenter\" src=\"https:\/\/plymouthcreate.net\/support\/_media\/applications\/install_omeka.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"level0\">\n<div class=\"li\">On the next page the installer will ask for some information about this install. The first thing you&#8217;ll want to do is decide where to install it. If you&#8217;re wanting to install Omeka on your main domain, you can leave the directory area empty. If you created a subdomain, you can select it from the dropdown menu. You also have the option of installing Omeka in a subfolder by typing in the folder name in the\u00a0<strong>Directory\u00a0<\/strong>field. While we recommend you keep this option, it is possible to only do minor updates, or turn them off completely. The installer will also create a database for you automatically, but if you&#8217;ve already created one for this website you can choose\u00a0<strong>Let me manage the database settings<\/strong>\u00a0and enter the details. Click\u00a0<strong>Install<\/strong>\u00a0to continue.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/plymouthcreate.net\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/omeka-database.001-e1460146569969.jpeg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-361\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-361\" src=\"http:\/\/plymouthcreate.net\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/omeka-database.001-e1460146569969-1024x468.jpeg\" alt=\"omeka database.001\" width=\"648\" height=\"296\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"level0\">\n<div class=\"li\">The installer will take just a few moments to install Omeka and a progress bar will keep you updated. When it is complete you will see a link to your new Omeka site as well as a link to the backend administrative section for your Omeka site. Click the\u00a0<strong>website<\/strong>\u00a0link to configure your new Omeka installation.\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mediacenter\" src=\"https:\/\/plymouthcreate.net\/support\/_media\/applications\/my_omeka_links.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"level0\">\n<div class=\"li\">When you visit your new Omeka installation for the first time, you will be taken to the site configuration page. Enter a\u00a0<strong>Username<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Password<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Email<\/strong>\u00a0for the administrative superuser (i.e. yourself).<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-213\" src=\"http:\/\/plymouthcreate.net\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/9422087925_cf7c86c725_o.jpg\" alt=\"9422087925_cf7c86c725_o\" width=\"502\" height=\"583\" \/><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"level0\">\n<div class=\"li\">Under \u201cSite Settings,\u201d enter an\u00a0<strong>Administrator Email<\/strong>\u00a0and a\u00a0<strong>Site Title<\/strong>. The Administrator email is the address that messages from the system (e.g. forgot password email reminder) will appear to come from. You might want to\u00a0<a class=\"urlextern\" title=\"https:\/\/plymouthcreate.net\/support\/cpanel\/creating-an-email-address\" href=\"http:\/\/plymouthcreate.net\/docs\/#creating-an-email-address\" rel=\"nofollow\">create a custom email address using these instructions<\/a>, for example\u00a0<a class=\"mail\" title=\"webmaster@yourdomain.com\" href=\"mailto:webmaster@yourdomain.com\">webmaster@yourdomain.com<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a class=\"mail\" title=\"omeka-admin@yourdomain.com\" href=\"mailto:omeka-admin@yourdomain.com\">omeka-admin@yourdomain.com<\/a>, to use for this purpose. The\u00a0<strong>Site Title<\/strong>\u00a0will appear at the top of your visitors&#8217; browser windows.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-214\" src=\"http:\/\/plymouthcreate.net\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/9422087901_f1349b92bc_o.jpg\" alt=\"9422087901_f1349b92bc_o\" width=\"496\" height=\"521\" \/><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"level0\">\n<div class=\"li\">Further down the\u00a0<strong>Site Settings<\/strong>\u00a0page are several numerical settings; you may leave these at the defaults if you are new to Omeka. When you are done making changes, click the\u00a0<strong>Install<\/strong>\u00a0button to submit the configuration page and proceed.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-215\" src=\"http:\/\/plymouthcreate.net\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/9422087885_d63b931583_b.jpg\" alt=\"9422087885_d63b931583_b\" width=\"493\" height=\"817\" \/><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"level0\">\n<div class=\"li\">Congratulations! Omeka is now installed. Use the buttons to either proceed to the\u00a0<strong>Public Site<\/strong>, or to begin adding content, go to the\u00a0<strong>Admin Dashboard<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-216\" src=\"http:\/\/plymouthcreate.net\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/9422087847_242d03b60f_o.jpg\" alt=\"9422087847_242d03b60f_o\" width=\"493\" height=\"309\" \/><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h1>Installing Plugins<\/h1>\n<p>There are a variety of plugins that enable\u00a0additional functionality in Omeka, but in order to easily add them you will first need to install <strong>Escher<\/strong>, a\u00a0plugin installer. All the plugins available for Omeka and their descriptions can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/omeka.org\/add-ons\/plugins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">on this page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>1. Find the <strong>Escher<\/strong> plugin listing and click the red button on the right to download the Escher\u00a0zip file.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/plymouthcreate.net\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/omeka-plugins.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-472\" src=\"http:\/\/plymouthcreate.net\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/omeka-plugins-1024x555.png\" alt=\"omeka-plugins\" width=\"648\" height=\"351\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">2. Next, open up your\u00a0<strong>cPanel Dashboard<\/strong> and click on\u00a0the\u00a0<strong>File Manager<\/strong>. You can find the File Manager under &#8216;Files&#8217; or by typing\u00a0&#8220;File Manager&#8221; in the upper right search bar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/plymouthcreate.net\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/file-manager-search.001.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-291\" src=\"http:\/\/plymouthcreate.net\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/file-manager-search.001-1024x576.jpeg\" alt=\"file manager search.001\" width=\"648\" height=\"365\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">3. Go to the <strong>public_html > omeka > plugins<\/strong> folder by clicking on the folder icons in the file menu, or by typing &#8220;public_html\/omeka\/plugins&#8221; into the navigation\u00a0bar at the top and clicking &#8216;Go&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/plymouthcreate.net\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/file-mngr.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-474\" src=\"http:\/\/plymouthcreate.net\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/file-mngr-1024x615.png\" alt=\"file-mngr\" width=\"648\" height=\"389\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">4. Next you will need\u00a0to upload the Escher zip file you downloaded into the plugins folder. Select the <strong>Upload<\/strong>\u00a0option\u00a0in the top menu to\u00a0open up a new tab where you can upload the zip file. When the upload is complete, click the &#8216;Go back to home\/yourdomain\/public_html\/omeka\/plugins&#8217; link\u00a0at the bottom of the page to return to the File Manager. You will see that the Escher zip file has appeared in the plugins folder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/plymouthcreate.net\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/extract.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-475\" src=\"http:\/\/plymouthcreate.net\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/extract-1024x617.png\" alt=\"extract\" width=\"648\" height=\"390\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">5. Make sure the Escher zip file is\u00a0selected (it should\u00a0be highlighted in blue), then click <strong>Extract<\/strong> from the menu at the top of the page. A small window will open up to confirm where the file will be extracted to. If you were in the plugins folder, it should say public_html\/omeka\/plugins, if not, type that into the box before you hit <strong>Extract File(s)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/plymouthcreate.net\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/extract2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-476\" src=\"http:\/\/plymouthcreate.net\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/extract2-1024x615.png\" alt=\"extract2\" width=\"648\" height=\"389\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">6. Another window will open that outlines the contents of the file. Just hit the <strong>Close<\/strong> button and the installation will be complete.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/plymouthcreate.net\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/extract3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-477\" src=\"http:\/\/plymouthcreate.net\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/extract3-1024x613.png\" alt=\"extract3\" width=\"648\" height=\"388\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a07. The Escher plugin should now be available\u00a0in the plugins tab in your Omeka.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/plymouthcreate.net\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/escher1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-483\" src=\"http:\/\/plymouthcreate.net\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/escher1-1024x511.png\" alt=\"escher1\" width=\"648\" height=\"323\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">8. Next, select the plugin you&#8217;d like to install from the dropdown menu and click the <strong>Upload<\/strong> button. The plugin will be installed and appear in the plugins page, which you can access from the menu at the top of the page.
